Rookie Gomez de Liano Fuels UP Past NU to Snatch 4th win in #UAAPSeason79

Javi Gomez de Liano once again proved that he’s going to give everyone a beating all his college years. The catch? He’s just a rookie but he’s showing why he deserved to be in the UP Fighting Maroons line-up this year. Coming in from the bench, Gomez de Liano made 13 points off 13 minutes in the game, all in the second half as they stunned NU Bulldogs, 71-66.

Gomez de Liano and the entire UP squad were hungry to crawl back as they mounted two losses against the DLSU Green Archers and FEU Tamaraws. Aside from Javi, Maroons stalwart Jett Manuel collected 19 points while junior Gelo Vito had his best scoring in his career with 15 points. Paul Desiderio may have chipped in 11 points only but he scored double-double in the game, with 13 rebounds.

In an outstanding outing, Maroons are now tied at fifth place with NU Bulldogs and are looking at a slim chance in the hunt for Final 4 slot against Adamson Falcons and Ateneo Blue Eagles.

The first quarter seemed like Maroons is willing to give up their slot already as NU outscored them 11-2. It was Gelo Vito who crept up and gave the Maroons the kick as he scored nine points towards the end of the first canto, 21-12.

With smooth ball-movement and excellent play-making, Jett Manuel sank a buzzer-beater three to keep UP within five points in the first quarter. A slow second quarter proved to be advantageous for the Maroons, which ended with Janjan Jaboneta closing out with another buzzer-beater from the corner.

It was in the third quarter when Manuel and Vito each converted their shots, providing UP their lead for the first time in the game. Javi then quickly went in for the Maroons and made his presence felt with four points upon entering from the bench, ending the third quarter at 45-41.

In the fourth quarter, Maroons kept their composure and played with fire at the start. They outsmarted the NU bulldogs after forcing them with fouls and getting scores off free throws in six possessions. At this point, Maroons widen their margin against the Bulldogs, 66-52.

Alejandro wouldn’t go down without a fight though as the captain unleased a 12-4 run closing the lead down to four. At 70-66 and ten seconds to go, it was Gomez de Liano who held the ball after drawing the last foul and perfecting his two free throws to give UP the fourth win.
