Student Athlete. This is what defined Joseph Rey Gallarza’s last few days here in the Philippines as he bade farewell to his life-long dream of becoming a professional basketball player to attend to more important things in Canada, where his son Reinen, is currently residing.

Because of this, JR Gallarza had to fly back to Canada and become a father to his son which really crushed everyone’s hearts after he formally announced it after the Fighting Maroons’ bid to UAAP Season 78 ended last year.

Gallarza was a transferee from De La Salle University before he became the feisty swingman to UP. He was the sparkplug that was instrumental to UP’s first win for a long time when they defeated Adamson Soaring Falcons. Gallarza threw treys without hesitation and scored his career-high that same game. Here’s the full report about JR Gallarza, the basketball player who graduated Magna Cum Laude in UP. Currently, to make ends meet, he is working as a program director for YMCA in Canada. While he really wants to go home and join his co-graduates on June, it’s still unsure if he can make it back in time. He said: “… it feels really comforting to have that solidified that I am graduating with honors from the school that I love thats given so much to me, yeah its amazing.”

It’s no easy task to graduate as Magna Cum Laude. What more if you’re studying in UP, right? So, let’s give this guy good vibes for showing that athletes can excel both in sports and academics!
